Though yoshoku literally means “Western food”, it is hard to think of the menu at a yoshokuten as anything other than Japanese.
At some point since Japan reopened its doors to the outside world the ideas behind hayashi raisu (beef and onions in gravy with rice) |

or omuraisu (rice in tomato sauce served inside and omelette) may have been imported from the West but now they are Japanese favourites in their own right. ![]() Those who are squeamish about raw fish and not into noodles will perhaps find food at a youshokuten closer to their tastes. |
