For those who have not lived in Japan, the first thing that comes to mind when they think of Japanese food is sushi. However, if you come to Japan, you will see that there is more to Japanese food than sushi.
Like in every country, Japan has its own comfort foods. Some of the most popular are fried foods such as korokke (croquettes made from chopped meat, vegetables and mashed potatoes), menchi katsu (deep fried ground meat and chopped onions coated with flour, egg, and breadcrumbs) and tonkatsu (breaded, deep-fried pork cutlets). |

All are regularly found on lunch menus in business districts and are popular among business men. ![]() They are also popular among hungry students because diners usually serve these dishes with all-you-can-eat shredded cabbage, rice, and miso soup. However, recently there have been dishes aimed at women where ingredients such as vegetables are added into the katsu to provide a healthier alternative. There are also fast food vendors and meat shops that sell korokke and menchi katsu as a snack.
Bakeries, convenience stores, and restaurants that specialize in these dishes also make sandwiches with them inside.
