Ameyoko, (Ameya Yokocho)

[lssue:2009/01/16]

Ameyoko, short for Ameya Yokocho meaning candy store alley, is a crowded market street along the Yamanote line train tracks near Ueno station.

The market sells everything from clothes to produce to a diverse crowd of shoppers from various countries. With its noisy jumble of stalls, the packed market offers a different landscape that may remind them of the sights and smells of neighboring Asian countries away from the typical skyscraper filled Tokyo.

The name Ameyoko also originates from World War Two where the Ame in Ameyoko stood for America in reference to the place being a black market where all American and other import products were sold.

There are also numerous international foods available in the general area for those looking for a bite.
