Miyagi Prefecture located in the northern part of Japan on the island of Honshu, is home to a variety of delicious local cuisines.
The most well known dish, gyutan or grilled beef tongue originates from the areas capital, Sendai. Although gyutan is served all over Japan as a yakiniku (Japanese style barbeque dish), if you eat it Sendai style it is part of a set menu flavored with salt, served with barley rice and tail soup.
The area is also well known for their seafood, especially oysters because of the nearby Matsushima Bay. These oysters can simply be eaten raw with vinegar and soy sauce, as tempura, or in a miso based hot pot. |
![]() A very unique snack that can be found in the area and is often given as a souvenir is zunda mochi, which is a rice cake covered with paste made from mashed green soybeans sweetened with sugar. |
